Johnstone and Linwood pupils take part in the Big Spring Clean

Pupils from Thorn Primary School and Linwood High School have been playing their part to improve their local environment by carrying out a litter pick in the grounds around their school as part of this year's Big Spring Clean.

They're just one of many primary and secondary schools across Renfrewshire participating in The Big Spring Clean, which is part of the council's award-winning Team Up to Clean Up initiative and is running until the 30 April.

The annual campaign sees local people being supported to take part in litter picks in their local area to help make a positive impact on their environment and encourage a change in attitudes towards littering.

As key part of the Big Spring Clean campaign is to engage with local schools. Council officers have been out visiting pupils to talk to them about littering and the effect it can have on the environment.

The council supports those who want to get involved by providing schools and volunteers with equipment, advice and clearing the rubbish afterwards.

Previous events have seen thousands of people take part, last year around 3,500 litter picks took place with more than 5,300 volunteers participating.

If you want to get involved in this year's Big Spring Clean, you can request equipment by calling  0300 300 1375, email wardens.es@renfrewshire.gov.uk, join the Team Up To Clean Up Facebook group or visit the Big Spring Clean webpage.
