Learning and development for council staff

Courses starting in Spring 2023, mandatory training, other courses, management development programme, the iLearn online learning platform.

Many of our courses are online on our iLearn online learning platform that you can do in your own time. There are 7 mandatory training courses that all Council employees must do. 

Other courses and training are in-person and have scheduled dates. If you have access to the staff intranet, you can see what courses are available and when they are on

If a course doesn't have a confirmed date, you can put your name on the waiting list for that course. Speak to your manager first and then complete the course nomination form to register your interest.

Courses starting in Spring 2023

Recruitment and selection

This course is mandatory for Council employees on a recruitment panel. Delivered on Microsoft Teams, the course covers recruitment and selection best practice, including our legal responsibilities, the shortlisting process and interview techniques. 

The next course dates are:

  • Tuesday 28 February 2023, 9.30am - 12.30pm.
  • Tuesday 14 March 2023, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Thursday 30 March 2023, 9.30am - 12.30pm
  • Wednesday 26 April 2023, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Tuesday 9 May 2023, 1.30pm to 4.30pm
  • Thursday 25 May 2023, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Tuesday 6 June 2023, 9.30am to 12.30pm
  • Thursday 15 June 2023, 9.30am to 12.30pm

Before attending this course, you must complete two modules on iLearn, as they cover part of the course content and are discussed in the workshop.

Managing discipline and grievance  

Delivered on Microsoft Teams, the course covers the approach to discipline and grievance situations, behaviours required as a manager when dealing with these issues, different question types and questioning skills. 

Next course dates:

  • Wednesday 22 March 2023, 10am to 12pm
  • Thursday 11 May 2023, 10am to 12pm
  • Tuesday 20 June 2023, 10am to 12pm.

Supporting attendance 

Delivered on Microsoft Teams, the course covers the behaviours required as a manager when dealing with absence issues, how to have an effective return-to-work interview and practice your approach to these situations using scenarios. 

Before attending this course, you must read the Supporting Attendance Policy and Guidance and complete the supporting attendance module on iLearn, as it covers part of the course content and is discussed in the workshop.

  • Tuesday 28 March 2023, 2pm to 4pm
  • Tuesday 25 April 2023, 10am to 12pm
  • Monday 22 May 2023, 2pm to 4pm.

Mandatory training for all employees 

There are 7 mandatory training courses that everyone working at the council must complete:  

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion awareness - this replaces the former Equality and Diversity Awareness module 
  • Cyber security - how to spot a phish 
  • Living our values 
  • Information security awareness 
  • Introduction to Freedom of Information (FOI) 
  • Introduction to GDPR 
  • Display Screen Equipment (DSE).

You can do all these courses on iLearn. To see your progress on iLearn, go to My Learning Pathways and select Reopen to refresh your mandatory course list. 


Other courses for all employees 

Other courses include: 

  • Compliance training in data protection, information sharing, information security, records management and surveillance legislation (RIPSA)
  • Health, safety and wellbeing including workplace training and looking after your own or other's mental health and wellbeing
  • Employee skills and People management courses 
  • Courses in communication, digital skills, emotional intelligence, living our values, prioritising and scheduling, unconscious bias, change environments, virtual teams
  • Courses in coaching, communication skills, challenging conversations, influencing, our values, meetings, virtual teams, finance, business continuity, risk, managing change, conflict, discipline grievance, supporting attendance, partnership and joint working, recruitment and selection. 

To register, you must speak to your manager first. If they give approval for you to sign up for the course, you can register your interest by completing the course nomination form. If a course doesn't have a confirmed date, you can still complete the form and put your name on the waiting list for that course.
