What the consultation is
We're exploring ways to improve the walking environment in 5 villages in Renfrewshire after residents raised concerns that the speed and volume of traffic are making the roads unsafe.
We appointed transport consultants Stantec to carry out a study in Bishopton, Bridge of Weir, Elderslie, Houston, and Lochwinnoch.
The aim of the study is to create a safer environment in the villages for all road users by managing traffic speeds, to encourage people to walk, wheel, and cycle more often for local trips.
It examined where vehicle speed on main through-roads is a safety concern and proposes traffic calming or pedestrian priority measures to address the issues.
Why we’re consulting
We're looking to improve the walking environment in 5 Renfrewshire villages after residents raised concerns that the speed and volume of traffic are making the roads unsafe.

Stage 1 feedback
The first stage of our consultation involved online surveys and in-person sessions in the communities to get feedback on the development of the initial designs for our Villages Safe Walking Initiative.
Thank you to everyone who shared your feedback. Your comments highlighted concerns about pedestrian safety and accessibility, particularly for vulnerable road users.
There was support for a variety of traffic calming measures, visibility improvements, and measures to make it easier for people to cross the road.
This feedback helped form the concept design proposals for the next stage of this consultation.
Stage 2 - tell us what you think about the concept designs
How to tell us what you think
In this stage, we're engaging with communities again to refine the concept design proposals for our Villages Safe Walking Initiative.
This will help us understand any specific design-related concerns or comments on the routes being progressed.
Through our Renfrewshire Villages Safe Walking Initiative storymap you can:
- see the concept designs for each of the villages, and
- tell us what you think of them in our online surveys.
See the concept designs and take the surveys
The deadline to complete the online surveys is Monday 29 June 2026.
What happens next
We’ve commissioned Stantec to assist us with developing the concept designs to the detailed design stage.
We’ll also refine cost estimates and develop a proposed implementation programme.
Detailed designs will be presented at in-person public events later in the summer.
