Renfrewshire Council

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality

In Scotland, the terms 'transgender people' and 'trans people' are used as umbrella terms which encompass all those whose personal experience of their gender differs from the assumptions and expectations of the society they live in.

Renfrewshire Council aims to raise awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, challenge negative attitudes and homophobia and ensure that the LGBT community is consulted in service design and delivery.

With regards to LGBT equality issues, the Equality Act 2010 extends the public sector equality duty to more fully include gender reassignment as one of the specific protected characteristics for which public bodies must take due regard of: the need to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation; the need to promote equality; and the need to promote good relations.
