Renfrewshire Council

Local Transport Strategy consultation

We're developing a new Local Transport Strategy for Renfrewshire.

It is called Travel Renfrewshire 2035 and will set out our local transport and travel priorities over the next 10 years.

Transport consultants AECOM are helping to develop the strategy to complement the regional strategy by SPT and the national strategy by Transport Scotland

It will support making Renfrewshire a great place to live, work and visit and help us to meet our responsibilities to:

  • Make bus and train journeys more accessible
  • Support Scottish targets to travel less by car
  • Encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling
  • Protect the environment
  • Reduce carbon emissions and work towards net zero

Transport and travel in Renfrewshire

Recent transport and travel reports and surveys show:

  • 34% of carbon emissions in Renfrewshire come from transport
  • 65% of journeys to work in Renfrewshire are by car
  • 79% of people in Renfrewshire spend more than 10% of their weekly income on transport costs

Our role in shaping transport and travel

We are working in a financially challenging period, so we need to choose the changes which make the biggest difference for every pound we spend locally.

  • We maintain our roads and footways - there's £5million this year to make improvements, added to more than £40million in recent years.
  • This has seen our A class roads rated second in Scotland and our B class roads fourth.
  • We're creating new walking, wheeling and cycling routes including a new route along the White Cart river between Paisley and Renfrew.
  • We've added more electric vehicle charging points and are replacing council vehicles with greener cars and vans.
  • We are also exploring ways to encourage use of public transport.
  • Our Plan for Net Zero is looking at new actions and options to support sustainable transport and travel.
