Wheelchair accessible taxi and private hire vehicles

On 31 October 2018, the Regulatory Functions Board agreed to publish a list under Section 167 of the Equality Act 2010 which designates wheelchair accessible taxis and private hire vehicles. The list was first published on 31 May 2019.

You will find the current list of wheelchair accessible vehicles currently licensed as taxi and private hire vehicles in the related content area on the righthand side of this page.

The drivers of designated vehicles have the following legal duties:

  • to carry the passenger while in the wheelchair
  • not to make any additional charge
  • to carry the wheelchair if the passenger prefers to sit in a passenger seat
  • to take necessary steps to ensure that the passenger is carried in safety and reasonable comfort
  • to give the passenger such mobility assistance as required.

Medical exemption for drivers of wheelchair accessible vehicles only.

Drivers only of a designated taxi or designated private hire vehicles are able to apply for an exemption to the duties set out above. Renfrewshire Council can only issue exemption certificates if satisfied that:

  • there are medical grounds why a driver cannot perform the duties
  • the drivers' physical condition makes it impossible or unreasonably difficult for the driver to comply with the duties.

The application form for exemption is available to be downloaded from the related content area of this page.  You will find further information on Gov.uk:
