Pupils and staff from an Erskine school are celebrating achieving a Gold Rights Respecting School award for the third time.
Bargarran Primary School first achieved the highest level of the UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools initiative in 2019.
Since then, the school have continued to promote and expand upon children’s rights in their curriculum and within the community.
Young people in Bargarran’s Rights Respecting Schools Pupil Parliament work together with their peers to maintain the school’s Gold status. They work on developing new approaches as well as continuing existing initiatives.
The UK Rights Respecting Schools award recognises putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of school planning, policies and practice. Rights Respecting Schools are communities where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.
Selena Kennedy, Depute Head Teacher, said:
We are very proud to be recognised with the highest level of UNICEF’s UK Rights Respecting School award for the third time. Children’s rights are at the core of our school’s ethos and curriculum. Staff and pupils discuss children’s rights in classes and rights are a regular feature of whole school assemblies.
A respect for children’s rights permeates all aspects of school life and we seek every opportunity to expand children’s knowledge on the UNCRC. We also aim to build responsible citizens who are confident to speak out about, and take action for, children’s rights. Our pupil parliament’s current aim is to share our learning with the wider community.
Education Convener, Councillor Emma Rodden, praised the school. She said:
This is a fantastic achievement for everyone at Bargarran Primary School. Earning the Gold Rights Respecting School award for the third time shows the school’s commitment to putting children’s rights at the centre of everything they do.
Pupils, staff and the wider school community are dedicated to championing respect, inclusion and wellbeing every day. Their work strengthens the school community by empowering young people with the confidence and values they will carry throughout their lives. I am incredibly proud of all they have accomplished.
