Pupils and staff at West Primary School, Paisley, celebrated Gaelic Week (Seachdain na Gàidhlig).
The school accommodates the Gaelic unit where Renfrewshire children aged 4 to 11 learn their education while speaking, reading and writing in Scottish Gaelic.
Gaelic teachers Rosie Kelly and Jan Dougan visited each primary class in the school to teach two Gaelic songs, Halò a h-uile duine (Hello Everyone) and Dè an latha a th’ ann? (What Day Is It?).
Pupils in primary 1 and 2 took part in Gaelic-themed arts and crafts, while primary 3 and 4 worked on Gaelic-themed STEM activities.
Older children in primary 5 and 6 did active learning games with Jamie Cleland, the Council’s Gaelic Medium Education Development Officer. Primary 7 had a visit from Jonathan Angell from Keep Scotland Beautiful, who has been translating his organisation’s documents into Gaelic.
Pupils attending the Gaelic unit where Gaelic Medium Education is taught took part in:
- sports and games, delivered by Aileas NicLeòid from Comunn na Gàidhlig (The Gaelic Society)
- beginner chanter lessons, delivered by Miss Jeffrey
- highland dancing lessons
