Young Scot National Entitlement Card (NEC)

The young person's National Entitlement Card (NEC), also known as the Young Scot Card, is a free card for young people aged 11 to 25 in Scotland.

What you can use the card for

You can use your Young Scot NEC for:

  • proof of age
  • discounts and rewards with shops, cafes and services
  • travel discounts.

Travel discounts and rewards

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 years old, you can get:

  • a third off single and most return train fares
  • half price weekly or monthly season tickets for buses and trains
  • a third off single fares on local buses

You can also earn Young Scot Rewards points for doing good things in your community such as volunteering.

How to apply

You can apply for a Young Scot NEC at any library in Renfrewshire. Ask the library staff for an application form. 

You'll also need to bring with you:

  • a recent passport style photograph
  • proof of address
  • proof of your age.

You can see examples of what you can use as proof of age or address on the National Entitlement Card website. If you don't have any of these documents, tell us what school you go on your application form to and we can check your details with your school.

We also visit primary schools each year to offer the card to primary 7 pupils before they go to secondary. If we haven't visited your school yet, and you're aged 11 or over, contact us at to get your card. Tell us your name, date of birth, your address and what school you go to.
