Radon compliance monitoring

Radon is a naturally occurring gas which we can't see, smell or taste.

You can read more about Radon and get information for homeowners and employers.

We worked with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on a Radon compliance monitoring programme in Renfrewshire.

We monitored Radon levels in council homes, buildings, schools and nurseries in areas of Renfrewshire classified by the UKHSA and British Geological Survey as having a higher potential for radon.

When the programme happened

The monitoring programme ran from June 2025 to February 2026.

Buildings we monitored

We gave Radon test kits to tenant at 290 council houses and ground floor flats in: Bridge of Weir, Elderslie, Johnstone, Paisley and Renfrew.

We monitored ground floor flats as Radon enters buildings from below the ground, so Radon levels are likely to be highest on lower floors.

Monitoring took place at 5 school and nursery buildings:

  • Ferguslie Early Learning and Childcare Centre
  • Fordbank Primary School
  • Kirklandneuk Primary School
  • Thorn Primary School
  • West Johnstone Shared Campus (Cochrane Castle Primary School, St David's Primary School and West Johnstone Early Learning and Childcare Centre).

We also carried out monitoring at 10 council owned buildings.

This included council buildings not in the higher potential areas, which have basements being accessed and used regularly.

Monitoring results

All council homes, council buildings, schools and nurseries where Radon levels were monitored have levels of Radon well below the UK action level.

This means no building repair works are needed.

What happens now

We’re following official guidance and will monitor at these same homes and buildings every 10 years.

We’ll also monitor them after we carry out major works or if we make significant changes to how these buildings are used.

Information for council tenants

Any council tenants who were invited to take part but chose not to participate can contact us or let their local housing officer know if they now want to participate in monitoring for Radon at their home in future. Find out how to contact your local housing team.

New council homes in the Howwood Road area of Johnstone are being built with measures to prevent Radon from entering.

We’ll monitor for Radon once our tenants move in to check these measures are working.
