What AMIDS South is
We’re connecting Paisley with the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) and Glasgow Airport, with a road and pedestrian bridge crossing the White Cart and a new link road which will serve the new Paisley Grammar School Community Campus and connect with the new bridge.
This transport project is called AMIDS South and includes:
- a road bridge crossing at Paisley Harbour (Harbour Road to Inchinnan Road) for pedestrians, cyclists and road traffic
- a gateway route from Paisley town centre along Abercorn Street, Harbour Road and Inchinnan Road to the manufacturing district AMIDS and Glasgow Airport - including new cycle routes and landscaping
- a new road link from Renfrew Road to Harbour Road which will serve the new Paisley Grammar School Community Campus and connect to the new bridge. This will create a new junction at the site of former Chivas building on Renfrew Road
- the Gallowhill Link which will use the former railway underpass to provide crossing under Renfrew Road from Gallowhill for the new school and on towards the bridge
- improved walking and cycling on Greenock Road between Inchinnan Business Park and AMIDS which has already been completed.
Economic projections in the business case for the project found AMIDS South could:
- bolster the local economy by an additional £136 million in private sector investment
- cut carbon emissions by more than 21,700 tonnes
- help existing and new companies to grow, creating new job opportunities for years to come.
Funding provided for AMIDS South includes £38.8million from the UK Government Levelling-Up Fund, £18.8million from Renfrewshire Council, and £1.5million provided by Transport Scotland for the Gallowhill Link.
Farrans Construction have been appointed to deliver the construction contract.
What the project will deliver
AMIDS South will:
- improve the links between Paisley, Gilmour Street Station, AMIDS and Glasgow Airport, as well as Gallowhill, Shortroods, Paisley town centre and the surrounding areas
- better connect communities to the jobs at AMIDS and to their work, studies and leisure pursuits
- deliver improved walking and cycling links including a 20-minute journey time saving walking between Gallowhill Road and Inchinnan Road
- make it easier to get to West College Scotland and Paisley Grammar School Community Campus
- enable business growth with increased access for customers and suppliers
- open up and enhance the environment along the White Cart river
- cut congestion in residential areas such as Shortroods.
Works on Renfrew Road
The first set of works begin on Monday 3 November 2025 as we start to create the new road and junction on Renfrew Road, which will ultimately lead to the new bridge and serve Paisley Grammar School Community Campus.
Phase 1 will include an outside lane closure on both sides of the road from just before the roundabout at the former Chivas site to the entrance of West College Scotland.
These lane closures will be in place for 25 weeks, as part of a 52-week programme of works on Renfrew Road.
We’ll continue to provide updates on the works on this webpage and through our email newsletter to ensure you’re able to plan ahead and use alternative routes as required.
When the project will be completed
The Gallowhill Link will be complete by spring 2026, and the new road and junction at Renfrew Road will be complete by summer 2026.
The full project is expected to be complete and open in spring 2028.
