What the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) is
The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) is Scotland's home of manufacturing innovation, located in Renfrewshire between Renfrew and Inchinnan, next to Glasgow Airport.
AMIDS includes:
- Netherton
- Inchinnan Business Park
- Westway.
Netherton is a new development on land between the White Cart river and Glasgow Airport.
It’s home to 2 world-class innovation centres - the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) and the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC).
Netherton has a state-of-the-art low carbon District Heating Network supplying heat and hot water 90% greener than a gas boiler.
Renfrewshire is also home to a number of world-class, high-value manufacturing businesses, and many of them are based next to Netherton at Inchinnan Business Park and at Westway.
This includes renowned international manufacturers including Boeing, Rolls Royce, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Peak Scientific and Terumo Aortic.
There's also research and skills centres including NMIS Group facilities, the University of Strathclyde's Advanced Forming Research Centre and the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre.
What the project will deliver
The council has formed a joint venture partnership with Buccleuch Property to develop AMIDS and attract high-class businesses to locate here, bringing skilled jobs, training and opportunities to Renfrewshire.
Funding through the Glasgow City Region City Deal has:
- delivered the enabling infrastructure, better connecting AMIDS to nearby commercial centres and enhancing walking and cycling routes
- created improved connections between the district and the wider Glasgow City Region through the Renfrew Bridge - the first opening road bridge over the River Clyde at Renfrew.
A new transport links project called AMIDS South has been funded by the UK Government's Levelling-Up Fund and Renfrewshire Council. It will create a new road and pedestrian bridge between the manufacturing district, the airport and Paisley – among a range of other infrastructure and transport connections.
