Apply for an additional year of free nursery or childcare

Who can get an additional year at nursery or childcare, deferring your child's place at primary school, our decision, early entry to primary school.

Who can get an additional year at nursery or childcare

All five-year-old children in Scotland must start school in the August after their fifth birthday.

If your child is still four in August, and they are not ready to start primary school, you can apply for an additional year at nursery or childcare.

If your child's fourth birthday is in January or February

If your child's fourth birthday is in January or February, they are automatically entitled to an additional year of free nursery or childcare.

You should apply for their extra year of free nursery or childcare [107KB] by mid February 2022.

You can ask for your child to continue at their current nursery or childminder. If not, we will provide them with a place at another of our council run or council funded nurseries or childminders.

If you want your child to go to a private nursery or childminder not funded by us, you'll have to pay for this yourself.

If your child's fourth birthday is between August and December

If your child's fourth birthday is between the start of the school year in August and December, they are not automatically entitled to an extra year of free nursery or childcare.

However, if you still want to defer their start at primary school, you should speak to your head of nursery or your childminder.

They will arrange a meeting with you to look at to your child's wellbeing, learning and development including:

  • their approach and attitude to learning
  • their ability to communicate their own needs, feelings, and ideas
  • their levels of independence and self-help
  • their emotional and personal development including self confidence and self-esteem
  • relationships and friendships with other children and adults
  • their cognitive development.

Defer your child's place at primary school

You should still enrol your child at primary school by the set date but let the school know that you want to defer their start at primary school for a year.

Once we have confirmed your child's extra year, you should let the primary school know straight away that your child does not need their place at school until the following year.

The head of your child's nursery or childcare must also contact the primary school to confirm your decision to stay there for another year and defer their entry to primary school.

Our decision

We will let you know if your child has got an additional year at their nursery or childminder before the Spring Break.

If they are not offered a place, they will be able to start the Primary 1 induction programme before the next school year starts.

We do our best to ensure that applications are treated fairly and transparently.  See our admissions policy for early learning, nursery and childcare [124KB] .

If you are not happy with our decision or feel we have not considered your application properly, you should discuss this with the head of your child's nursery or their childminder.
