What this service is
You must get permission from the council before using a raised structure under Section 89 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 (legislation.gov.uk).
A raised structure is a temporary platform or similar structure that people use or occupy during an event.
Examples include:
- temporary grandstands at sporting events
- stages at concerts and public events, including trailers used as stages
- circus structures
- media platforms.
Our building standards team assesses applications, inspects structures and issues consent for approved raised structures.
Who can apply
You can apply if you're responsible for erecting, managing or using a raised structure for an event in Renfrewshire.
You must obtain permission before the structure is used. Using, or allowing others to use, a raised structure without council approval is an offence and may result in a fine.
How much it costs
The standard application fee is £413.44.
For local gala days and similar community events, we may decide not to charge a fee. Each case is considered individually.
We will not process your application until we have received the correct fee in full.
Before you apply
You must provide these supporting documents with your application:
- a design certificate signed by a structural engineer
- a detailed plan of the structure at a scale of 1:100
- elevations (drawings showing the structure from the outside)
- cross-sections (drawings showing the structure as if it has been cut through)
- a specification describing the size and type of materials used
- details of escape routes, including passageways, gangways and seatways
- details of stairs, including rise, going, pitch and handrails.
Providing complete and accurate information will help us assess your application more quickly.
