Young Renfrewshire pipe band strike the right note with championship success

Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band prepare to play as they stand in formation on a grass field for the European Championships.

Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band are celebrating an outstanding start to the competition season.

Seniors in the pipe band secured third place at two of the UK's biggest pipe band events.

The young people competed in the Juvenile A category at the British Pipe Band Championships. After that, they competed in the European Pipe Band Championships.

The impressive results come after the pipe band's memorable trip to New York in 2025. They represented Renfrewshire and Scotland at the Tartan Day celebration.

The pipe band are supported by Renfrewshire Council's Instrumental Music Service. Music tuition has been free to all pupils since 2017.

Pipe Major Caitlin Macdonald said:

To achieve third place at both competitions in our first season competing in the Juvenile A grade is a fantastic result. The pupils have shown real determination, resilience and commitment throughout the year, and they fully deserved this success.

As a teacher, it is a privilege to work with such talented and hardworking young people. I'm incredibly proud of what they have achieved so far and excited to see how they continue to develop. It has also been brilliant to see our younger band making excellent progress in its first competitive season. The future of piping in Renfrewshire is very bright.

Ellie Harrison, Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band member, added:

Winning third place at the British Championships was a proud moment for everyone in the band. We spent months practising together and working hard to improve, so it was really rewarding to see that effort recognised. I'm grateful to have been part of it and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

Councillor Emma Rodden, Renfrewshire Council's Education Convener, said:

Everyone in the Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band should be extremely proud. Earning podium finishes at two major championships is a remarkable accomplishment.

The band's success is a wonderful example of what young people can achieve when they have the opportunity to develop their talents. We are proud to continue supporting our young musicians and showcase our homegrown talent.

A busy programme of competitions awaits the pipe band. They will also perform at Renfrew Pipe Band Completion, Scottish Championships, and World Pipe Band Championships.
