Paisley nursery celebrates children’s artistic talents

Children at a Paisley nursery have celebrated their creativity in a special art exhibition.

Hugh Smiley Early Learning and Childcare Centre took part in the initiative with Made in Paisley.

Over six weeks, the children made art for the weather-themed exhibition, Blue Like The Sky.

Children explored art by Scottish artist Joan Eardley. They studied the art and experimented with colour and texture. This helped them develop their own artistic expression.

The heart of the project was allowing children to show their own interests through art. Their individual experiences and skills help celebrate diverse voices and talents.

The exhibition was held at the Made in Paisley art studio. Families were invited to attend.

Lyndsey Crawford, depute head of centre for the nursery, said:

This exhibition marks the culmination of a fantastic six-week collaboration between our nursery and Made In Paisley, made possible through funding from the Hugh Smiley Trust, organised and administered by Lorraine Cameron, Provost of Renfrewshire, and Carole McAlphine Scott of Morton Fraser MacRoberts.

While Made In Paisley typically works with children aged seven and above, my vision was to create an inclusive project that gave every child the opportunity to participate, from our youngest babies through to our pre-school children. Inspired by the work of Scottish artist Joan Eardley, the children explored colour, texture, landscapes and weather through meaningful, hands-on experiences that nurtured creativity, curiosity and confidence.

The exhibition provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the children's achievements, and I was incredibly proud to see such an amazing turnout from children, families and staff. This project reflects our commitment to inclusion and high-quality learning experiences for all children, while ensuring that Hugh Smiley's legacy continues to make a lasting difference to children, families and the wider Paisley community.
