Communicate with Renfrew Bridge Control and request a bridge opening

Overview, information for all vessels, how to request a bridge opening, legal information.

This information is for masters, skippers, and pilots whose vessels will pass the Renfrew Bridge.

All vessels must communicate with Bridge Control using the procedures below.

On this page:

Overview

Bridge Control is staffed 24 hours a day.

Bridge Control will not open the bridge if wind speeds average 30 knots or more.

The opening procedures below are designed to prevent vessels from approaching the bridge while it is locked across the river. Make sure you follow the right procedure for your vessel type:

If any bridge mechanisms fail, we have procedures in place to correct those issues and get the bridge open as soon as possible.

In the unlikely event of a major fault that would prevent Bridge Control from moving the bridge, there is an alternative layby berth next to Rothesay Dock. Vessels may dock in this location only when directed to do so by Bridge Control. In these cases, a mooring team will be on hand at the layby berth.

Information for all vessels

This information is for vessels of all categories:

  • All vessels passing the bridge location must communicate with Bridge Control.
  • The bridge provides a 5.51 metre headway above mean high water springs when in use by road traffic. All vessels with an air draft higher than 5.51 metres must request a bridge opening.
  • Requests for bridge openings must come from the master, skipper, or pilot to Bridge Control.
  • You must provide at least 3 hours' notice to request a bridge opening.
  • You must tell Bridge Control:
    • your vessel's name
    • its length
    • its air draft (for category 3 leisure vessels only).
  • Bridge Control will open the bridge while the vessel is on its way to the bridge location and at a defined location on the river.
