Renfrewshire Council

Four years of keeping The Promise

We're marking the four-year anniversary of The Promise Scotland and calling for you to get involved.

In 2016 the former First Minister instructed an independent review of the Care System in Scotland. Running from 2017 to 2020 the review listened to more than 5,500 voices, over half of which were children and young people who have experience of the care system.

The conclusion of this work was The Promise, which was published four years ago today.

Scotland promised to be the best place in the world to grow up where all children would be loved, safe, and respected so they can realise their full potential.

At its core, The Promise is about transforming Scotland's care system through empowering and listening to the care experienced community. It sets out the changes needed at various levels across society, to improve the lives of care experienced people.

In the first year following publication of The Promise, Scottish Ministers established The Promise Scotland. Their role is to facilitate and support the realisation of those changes across all sectors.

Get involved with our Promise Keeper network

Today at Renfrewshire Council, our Promise Keeper network is growing all the time. More than 200 colleagues are now spreading the word and helping teams across the Council make meaningful changes to the way they design and deliver their services.

Like volunteer coordinator and Promise Keeper Val Tkacenko, from our events team, who is supporting care experienced young people to get involved with creative opportunities. Read more about how Val is helping embed The Promise principles into the way our events team plan and deliver activities.

Why not consider signing up to become a Promise Keeper yourself and like Val, discover practical ways you can make a difference in your team?

Our new e-learning course offers a useful guide to The Promise and our Promise Keepers network. Log on to iLearn for full details.
