Adult courses, learning and development

Courses for adults including literacy, English language, crafting and mending, equalities, money management, parenting, personal development, life skills, wellbeing, women's history and work clubs.

Our courses:


Adult literacy including reading, writing, spelling and numbers

These sessions are for anyone aged 16 years or over who wants to improve their reading, writing, spelling and numbers for everyday life, work or learning.

You will learn at your own pace, in a group with other learners.

You will learn things like:

  • helping your child with homework
  • calculating change and interest rates on purchases
  • measuring for home improvements
  • other daily literacy activities.

We can also help you with support to find work or progress in your current job, for example, help with the driving theory test.

How to join


Crafting and mending

This group is for anyone interested in sewing, mending or crafting. All levels of skill and experience welcome.  

You can learn basic stitching, hemming, quilting or how to work a sewing machine.

Culture and conversation group (ESOL)

This is a weekly class for people new to Scotland who would like to:

  • practice your English
  • find out more about services
  • find out about opportunities in your new community.

English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) for beginners

This is a weekly class for basic or elementary learners of English.

Equalities

This course looks at the Equalities Act and its benefits to protected groups as well as exploring the discrimination that many people have faced in the past and how they have overcome this.

It is good for having conversations about inequalities and getting people to think about their own behaviours and attitudes.

Love learning about money

Money management is an essential life skill that adults and children can learn. Children often learn about money in the home. Parents and carers have an important role in shaping children's attitudes, behaviours and skills with money.

This course can help parents, carers and children:

  • manage household finances
  • learn money saving tips and looking at ways of budgeting more efficiently.

Men's personal and social development

This group provides a space for men of all ages to participate in activities and discussion.

A varied programme of topics and activities are provided which are directed by the interests of those attending, covering a wide range of subjects, from health and wellbeing to history.

The informal drop-in nature of the group makes every week interesting and there's always something new to learn.

More mend, less spend

Find out how you can save and also help the planet.   

You can learn how to:

  • make a draft excluder and re-usable cloths
  • mend clothing
  • make your own chemical-free cleaning solution.

The courses are free and all materials are provided.

Parenting

This course is for any parent or carer, who would like to improve communication with their child or teenager and build mutual respect, self-esteem and confidence.

This is a course that helps learners to begin the process of self-reflection, helps learners to acknowledge their skills and strengths, and supports learners to take the first steps back into learning.

It is a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment that enables learners to embark on a new and exciting learning journey.

Wellbeing courses

We offer a range of wellbeing courses which help participants identify strategies for improving their own health and wellbeing, both physically and mentally. The courses are ideal to help people develop their social skills and confidence.

Women's history

The Women's History course discusses a range of issues affecting women.

We look at the current attitudes towards gender today, both in the UK and other countries.

We also explore how women have achieved rights throughout the years from the 19th century onwards and how this affects us today.

This is a great group for generating discussion, empowering women and building confidence.

Work clubs

The Work Club provides access to computers and the internet for job seekers.

Staff can support you with:

  • registering for and updating Find a Job
  • emails
  • job searches
  • filling out application forms
  • updating and uploading your CV online.

Work clubs are drop-in sessions, so you don't need to register or book a place. You can just come along to any of these learning centres:

  • Southend Action Centre, Paisley - Mondays (excluding public holidays), 9:30am to 11:30am
  • Bargarran Learning Centre, Erskine - Tuesdays 9:30am to 11:30am
  • Foxlea Learning Centre, Foxbar - Tuesdays, 12:30pm to 2:30pm
  • West Johnstone Community Learning Centre, Johnstone - Wednesdays, 12:30pm till 2:30pm
  • Glenburn Learning Centre Glenburn - Thursdays, 9:30am to 11:30am
