Troubleshooting tips

If you have any of the following issues with iLearn, try these tips first to see if they resolve the issue.

You've completed the course, but it still shows as in progress

Check first that you have worked through all the resources on the course.

If a course is still open in your browser, iLearn won't show it as complete. You need to close the course by using the Exit course link or selecting the cross on the top right of the browser window to close it.

If the course still shows as in progress, try logging out of iLearn and logging in again.

If the course status still doesn't change, contact us at orgdev.cs@renfrewshire.gov.uk and we will resolve this for you.

The course doesn't load

If you open a course and it doesn't load in the new window and you only see a blank screen.

This can happen when you have been interrupted while working through a module and it has timed out.

Let us know which course is affected, and we will reset it for you. Email us at orgdev.cs@renfrewshire.gov.uk. Once it's been reset, log out of iLearn and then log back in before you open the resource again.

You can't move through a course

If you've opened a course but can't see the navigation buttons to move onto the next screen, reduce the magnification on your browser. Press Ctrl and - until the next button shows on the bottom right of the screen. Use Ctrl and + to increase the size again.

This affects some of our older courses which we are working on resolving.

A pop-up blocker stops the course from opening

If a pop-up blocker on your browser stops your iLearn courses from opening, add the iLearn site to the list of allowed sites in your settings.

Add this web address to your allowed list: https://app.tessello.co.uk:443

See these videos for help with allowing pop ups in your browser:

Welcome to your new look iLearn

If you're a regular on our old iLearn, you'll recognise lots of familiar features. And there's loads of exciting additions to help you pick up new skills and develop the ones you have.

Logging in and out

Tessello is the name of the system we use so if you get email password resets, they'll come from there and not a Renfrewshire.gov.uk email address.

Go to Renfrewshire.gov.uk/ilearn to log in.

There's a different process depending on whether you are currently a member of staff or join the Council after 26 January 2022.

If you are currently a member of staff your password will be reset.

To access iLearn for the first time after the upgrade, log in using your employee number as your username and your password will be your Employeenumber_surname, all in lower case.

If you are a new member of staff, joining the Council after 26 January 2022, log in using your employee number as your user name. Your password will be your SURNAME (all in capitals).

Let's get set up

You'll be asked to add a photo of yourself on first log in. Don't worry if you don't have this.  You can add one later.

If you do want to add an image, just choose select a file. When it's uploaded, choose next.

Memorable question

Then you'll also be asked to set up a security question:

  • What is your favourite colour?
  • Father's first name
  • Favourite fruit
  • Year of birth

Once you've set up your security question, this allows you to reset your password yourself, if you forget it. Of course if you forget the answer to your security question and your password you can still reset by selecting the forgotten your password link or by emailing orgdev.cs@renfrewshire.gov.uk.

Terms of use

On first use, iLearn house rules will display. Please take the time to read these.

You will not be able to continue the log in process unless you agree to these terms by checking the box and choosing Finish.

When your first log in is complete, a welcome message will display.

Personalising your experience

Choose the person icon at the top right to view Profile settings that allow you to personalise your account and change your settings. You can add a photo of yourself by selecting the pencil icon on the top right of the image. Use the pencil icons for each field to make changes. For example, to add your contact details and a link to your LinkedIn profile. You can also reset your password or your memorable question on these links. You can see the Communities you belong to under user group but more on this later.

Other users of the system can see your number, job title and Linkedin link, if you add these to your profile.

Getting around the site

So from iLearn's home page, you can see there's a search at the top and a set of icons. Left to right these are for Learning Pathways, Communities, new messages and your profile. These links will always be at the top of your screen, wherever you go on iLearn.

Then there's quick links to My Learning Pathways with details in the centre showing which you are enrolled in and what progress you have made.

Then to the right, a link to the Communities area.

We'll cover these new features a wee bit later in this tour.

You'll find Privacy and Disclaimer links at the bottom right of every screen.

To navigate back to the home page from anywhere else on iLearn, just choose the home icon on the top left of every page.

Finding resources

Spotlight is another great new feature in iLearn. Always check this section first as it will update regularly. Please make sure that you have completed the resources highlighted in this section as they are particularly important and reflect Council priorities that affect the job that you do, for example new cyber security or GDPR refresher training.

Courses is a great place to go if you want to browse for resources on particular themes as it lists all top level categories on iLearn.

The purple "new" button in iLearn highlights any resource that you haven't opened yet not necessarily a resource that's just been added. So think of this as "new to you."

You can also use the search field at the top to look for specific resources, for example, on our values.

You'll see at a glance what's available and your progress with each resource. You can filter your search and limit resources by choosing Resources, Learning Pathways, Communities or Individuals on the left of the screen. By default, the search will find everything.

Alternatively browse by course category and select the plus symbol on the right of subcategories to see all the resources within that subcategory and the minus symbol to close it again.

Resources

Looking at a specific resource, you can see whether a resource is complete, in progress or not started yet by looking at the progress bar for each item.

You don't have to complete resources in one sitting. If you open a course for example, and you need to stop, the next time you access that resource you will be returned to the last page you were on.

You can also tell what sort of resource each one is by looking at the icon. If you are opening a course that's shown with the laptop icon, the play arrow means it's a video, doc means it's a word file and PDF a PDF file.

Selecting the "i" icon on the resource opens up a short summary to help you decide if this is going to be helpful for you.

You can like a resource by selecting the thumbs up icon. When you like a resource the thumbs up icon will turn green and the number to the right of this shows the total number of people who have liked this resource.

If you've found a resource useful, you can share it. Select the arrow to share a resource with others in one of your communities. You can add text to explain why you are recommending it.

Learning pathways

We're really excited about the My Learning Pathways feature that we've just introduced. It gives us a new way to group content together on a specific theme in ways that make it easier for you to keep track of your progress when you are completing multiple related resources, for example, mandatory cyber security courses.

You'll see progress at a glance on the home page but you can also visit the Learning Pathways area where you'll be able to access all your pathways in one place.

Just to note that these aren't the same thing as the Microsoft Learning Pathways that  was introduced within Microsoft Teams in late 2021. Microsoft's Learning Pathways help you find support with doing things within Microsoft 365 whereas My Learning Pathways in iLearn groups related resources on a single theme, like dementia care or project management.

You'll see the date that you must complete all resources by on the top right. To complete a pathway, you must complete all the resources contained within it and choose submit.

You may find that you have been enrolled in a pathway because you belong to a particular group or are in a specific role but you can self enrol in many of the pathways.

You'll also be able to view Pathways that you can enrol in or are enrolled in by browsing that particular category.

Relevant pathways will display at the bottom of that page.

Just choose "enrol". Confirm by saying "yes" and you will be enrolled#. When you are enrolled in a new learning pathway, you'll receive a notification to let you know that's happened.

Communities

Communities are another brand new feature in this upgrade to iLearn. Communities can be Council wide or people from a particular group. For example, a community could be made up of people on our Lead to Succeed leadership programmes. It gives you a way to connect with other people and lets you ask questions and have discussions with others in the same situation.

You can use the forum functions to reply to others, post comments, external links and to share iLearn resources with others in your community. You can also add links to files including images by using the paperclip icon. You can reply to posts and you can like other people's posts using the thumbs up icon.

Just use the "What do you want to share?" field on the top right to start a new discussion. When you are ready, choose "post" to publish your comment or "cancel" to abandon the post. You can delete any post you created by going to the down arrow on the top right of your post and selecting "Delete Post".

Please do remember the iLearn terms of use and the Council's code of conduct. Be mindful that this is a work resource so don't post anything that identifies someone else or anything personal. If you do see anything that makes you uncomfortable, you have the option to report a post.
