How to dispose of sanitary products

How you should bin disposable sanitary towels and tampons, alternatives to using disposable sanitary products.

More than 3 billion disposable sanitary products are bought in the UK every year. These are either incinerated, landfilled or end up on our beaches if they have been flushed down the toilet.

Alternative and equally effective sanitary protection products are available that will not only cut down on the waste you produce, but also save you money in the long run. For advice see: www.wen.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/sanpro.pdf

or www.mooncup.co.uk. Mooncups are much easier to use than you may think, and are now available in many health food shops and stores..

Pure cotton reusable menstrual pads can be bought from Natasha Hood: 0131 228 1538, natasha@cheery.freeserve.co.uk

Do not flush sanitary towels and tampons down the toilet. They are not always removed during sewage processes and can contribute to marine pollution.

If you choose to use disposable towels or tampons, use 'Bag It and Bin It' bags available by mail order (See Mail Order Catalogues).
