Lawnmowers

Unwanted or broken lawnmowers are not accepted as part of your recycling scheme at home; however, they are accepted are household waste and recycling centres.

Alternatively, if the item is still in good working condition, you might like to...

Pass them on

Community and re-use organisations:

  • Check with local community groups - lawnmowers and gardening equipment is often required.
  • Sometimes local re-use organisations will take them too - they are then sold at low cost to help others. Check locally to see if they will accept these items in your area.
  • If you live in Scotland: call the National re-use phone line to donate your lawnmower on 0800 0665 820.

Online

Friends, family and local events

  • Ask family and friends - often they can use the things we don't want any more.
  • Sell items locally at car boots, nearly new and bring and buy sales.
  • Advertise them in the local paper or on local noticeboards.

Recycle them

  • Electric lawnmowers are classed as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and can be recycled at the household waste recycling centre with other electrical items.
  • Petrol lawnmowers can be placed in the scrap metal skip for recycling. Please make sure that the petrol tank is completely empty.
  • Push lawnmowers are generally made from metal and can be placed in the scrap metal skip for recycling. If the grass collection bin is made from plastic, this should be removed. Staff at the recycling centre will be able to advise which container you should put this in.
