Linwood lights up blue to mark World Drowning Prevention Day

Raising awareness of water safety in memory of William McNally.

Evening image of Tweedie Hall light up blue Newly installed lights at Linwood's Tweedie Hall will be switched on for the first-time this evening (Thursday 25 July), to mark World Drowning Prevention Day. The date holds significant importance locally, as we commemorate William McNally, who tragically lost his life at just 13-years-old while swimming in the area in 2021.

In addition to Tweedie Hall, the Houstoun Square Bandstand in Johnstone, Renfrew Town Hall, and the Bascule Bridge are also to be illuminated in William's memory as a reminder about the critical dangers associated with open water swimming.

Since William's tragic accident, his family have been dedicated to raising awareness and have worked in collaboration the Council to promote water safety. Their efforts have led to the installation of additional public rescue equipment in areas identified as potential spots for wild swimming and increased GPS signage at various waterways.

There has also been engagement with schools across the area to educate young people on staying safe around water including training sessions on cold water shock response, lifesaving techniques, and first aid.
