Renfrewshire Council

Collaborative risk group shortlisted for national award

Good luck to our Corporate Risk Management Group colleagues who have been shortlisted for Team of the Year at the ALARM Risk Awards 2023.

Celebrating outstanding teams for their achievement, commitment, and enthusiasm in the promotion of service delivery, the coveted category would be a prestigious win for our risk professionals in the public sector.

With collaboration at the heart of our Group, representatives from all council services have been working together to deliver the biggest development in risk management the Council has seen for 10 years.

Our risk manager, Karen Locke, outlines the Group's achievements:

"This past year has been all about delivering our new innovative model for handling the business-as-usual risks that are an unavoidable part of ongoing service delivery.

"We've worked with a range of stakeholders across the council to shift from the old, tired methods of recording these risks to a new model where Heads of Service regularly undertake self-assessments. This is a more dynamic approach that provides clear evidence of how well risks are being controlled as well as assurance from our Heads of Service as subject matter experts.

"We've also completely redefined how we work as a team, making better use of technology to proactively plan and collaborate both within the group and with our stakeholders.

"These changes are already adding significant value across the council, and we are confident they will help us to continue taking massive strides forward in improving our service delivery."

Andrea McMahon, chief auditor added: "We are delighted to be part of the Risk Awards Team of the Year category and just to be shortlisted is wonderful recognition of all our hard work. There has been a real team effort to improve how we work and get our new risk assurance model up and running. To be recognised for this by our risk management peers would be the 'icing on the cake' of what has been a very productive year for the group."

ALARM is a not-for-profit membership association that promotes best practise, training and networking for risk management and related services professionals across the UK. Each year their Risk Awards recognise and showcase the best of risk management, resilience planning and business continuity in the public service sector.

This year's winners will be announced on Monday 3 July at an awards dinner event in Manchester. We wish Karen, Andrea, and the rest of our CRMG the very best of luck!
