Renfrewshire Council

Publication of independent review on demand for Dargavel education provision

An independent external review into the council's decisions regarding the demand for education provision in Dargavel village has been published today (15 June 2023). The report was commissioned at the end of last year by Chief Executive Alan Russell following work to review the increasing demand for primary school education in the area.

The report was published as part of the papers for the council meeting next week where it will be considered by Councillors. The council's response has also been published today as part of those papers and accepts all the report's recommendations.

Chief Executive Alan Russell said: "This is a difficult read for the council and clearly sets out a number of historic failings in our organisation over a number of years. This will be particularly difficult for the communities in Dargavel and Bishopton who had raised concerns previously which were not investigated. I have written to parents directly today to offer my apologies and reaffirm my commitment to working with them going forward.

"I commissioned this review to ensure that the circumstances of these decisions could be fully considered and all learnings taken forward and I have accepted the recommendations in the report today. Along with the council's leadership team, I am committed to continuing to work with parents and local representatives going forward as our work progresses over the years ahead. The governance we have set up to oversee the delivery of this programme involves colleagues from across the council and I would like to acknowledge the hard work of all those involved."
