"I didn't go to Malawi with many expectations and I think that was a good thing. Nothing can really prepare you for the culture shock - but experiencing a completely new place and meeting so many different people was wonderful.

"We got to spend time with the local people, playing games with the local children and dancing with some of the women. It's amazing that you don't need to speak someone's language to make a connection with them. There are also day trips available on the weekend days and the chance to get some down time. I went on a land and boat Safari which was incredible. I saw hippos, elephants, crocodiles and lots of other animals.

"The main activity I was involved with was building the school walls. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be - you get great guidance, and everyone mucks in. We were working alongside a local builder who supervised small groups of helpers and taught us each step in the process. I realised I can handle more than I used to give myself credit for.

"I can understand why so many people have taken part in the project several times. It was a really special experience and I'd love to go back someday."
