Renfrewshire Council

Additional Support Needs update: review on hold

Given the need for the council to focus its resources to tackle the immediate Coronavirus crisis, the Additional Support Needs Review has been put on hold with immediate effect.

This means that any changes that may have been implemented as part of the review will be delayed in this financial year 2020/21. At this time there is no decision on when the review will restart.

Why is this necessary?

The impact of the situation on council services is unprecedented. Staff have been working tirelessly to respond to the crisis by supporting for children, young people and families while also keeping essential services running. It is not possible to ask more of our workforce at this time.

The decision to put the ASN Review on hold recognises that we have not been able to make the operational changes we had planned that would enable the release of staff. Without those changes in place we risk placing additional pressure on our remaining workforce and that contradicts the very principles of the review.

If I applied for VR/VER, what does that mean for me?

Our VR/VER scheme and expressions of interest will be put on hold with immediate effect while we focus our resources on tackling the immediate Coronavirus crisis.

This means that we have temporarily halted our VR/VER application process. When the review restarts, we will revisit staff who expressed a continued interest in VR/VER and you will not have to re-apply.

I understand this is a very unsettling time for everyone and the postponement of the review may create additional uncertainty for you.  I would like to thank everyone for their continued contribution to our response to this pandemic and for your patience and understanding at this time.  I want to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to manage this crisis, plan for our recovery and to restart the review when possible. We will continue to keep you fully updated.

Who can I contact if I have a question?

In the meantime, should you require any further information do not hesitate to contact a member of the VR/VER team by email at or by telephone at 0141 618 7324.
