Used when a full resurfacing is not required, surface dressing restores the road surface and seals it in one process. The road is sprayed with a bitumen binder, followed by a layer of chippings. The chippings are pressed into the surface by a rolling machine. To make sure of a uniform coating of the emulsion, more chippings are deliberately applied to the surface than is actually required to complete the dressing process.

Prior to the road being open to traffic, it is swept to remove the excess chippings and the road then receives further sweeps to remove any loose chippings that result traffic on the new surface.

Micro-surfacing is a protective seal coat which extends the life of road. It is a thin, tough layer of asphalt emulsion blended with finely crushed stone for traction. This is used to renew the road surface and seal minor cracks and other small faults.

Road classifications

Class A

Class A roads are usually either dual or single carriageway roads and are major roads intended to provide large scale transport links within or between areas

Class B

Class B roads generally have lower traffic densities than main trunk roads or Class A roads. Class B roads are not rated in terms of the width or quality of the road. Class B roads are intended to connect different areas and to feed traffic between Class A roads and smaller roads. These can range from dual carriageways to single track roads with
passing places.

Classified unnumbered

These roads are generally smaller roads intended to connect together unclassified roads with Class A and Class B roads

Unclassified

Unclassified roads are generally local roads which are intended for local traffic. The vast majority of roads in Scotland (60%) fall in to this category.
