Renfrewshire Psychology of Parent Project (PoPP)

What is Psychology of Parenting Project (PoPP)?

Children aged between 3 and 6 can sometimes find it difficult to manage their behaviour and emotions. This can make it difficult for them to get on with family members or other children. Parenthood can be extremely rewarding and enjoyable. It can also be demanding, frustrating and exhausting. It's difficult to know how to effectively manage challenging behaviours and achieve a happier, more positive relationship with your child.

PoPP provides positive parenting programmes to help you manage the challenging behaviours and enjoy being a parent. The parenting programmes come in the form of weekly groups for parents to look at ways of helping their child manage emotions and behaviour.

What are the PoPP groups like?

The groups are very small - no more than 12 parents and two group leaders. You will be made to feel very welcome and will have a couple of chats with the group leaders before you attend the first meeting. The group leaders will give you some techniques to try both during the group and then at home to encourage appropriate behaviour from your child. This should help reduce the stress for the whole family and allow you to have a more positive relationship with them. There's also time during each group meeting for a tea or coffee break and a chat with the other parents who are going through the same thing as you to see what approach is working best for them.

How long do the groups last?

There are two different types of groups - known as 'Incredible Years®' and 'Triple P® Level 4'. An Incredible Years® group consist of 14 weekly group sessions. A 'Triple P® Level 4' group runs for a total of 8 weeks and consists of 5 weekly group sessions and 3 weekly individual phone calls. Each individual weekly group session lasts about two hours.

Where and when are the groups held?

We have scheduled both types of groups (Incredible Years® and Triple P® Level 4) in a variety of easy to get to venues across Renfrewshire - mainly Paisley, Renfrew/Erskine and Linwood/Johnstone. Each group will start at 9.30 and finish around 11.30. Groups will not run during school holiday periods. We have tried to use venues which are within walking distance of local schools and pre-5 centres / nurseries. One of the group leaders will chat with you a couple of times before the group actually starts, let them know if you think you may need support in getting to the venue for the start of each group.

I have a younger child - can I still attend?

We know it's difficult to commit to 14 or 8 weeks of a group when you have a baby or toddler. We will make sure that some of the groups offer a crèche facility to allow you to relax and focus on the discussion at the group.

How do I get on a group?

You can request to attend one of the groups if you have a child aged between 3 and 6 and are finding it difficult to manage challenging behaviour. Have a word with your Health Visitor or the staff in the nursery or school your child attends in the first instance. They can help you to identify which positive parenting programme (Incredible Years® and Triple P® Level 4) best suits your families needs. It is also sometimes possible to attend a group if your child is aged between 2 and 7.
