The register
Renfrewshire Council's Visual Impairment Team (VI Team) holds the register of blind and partially sighted people in Renfrewshire. This is kept up to date and acts as an effective service delivery and planning tool.

Accessible information
The VI Team holds a record of all registered people's preferred format and will try to use this preferred format whenever contacting people by mail.

Duty system
People wishing to contact the team have access to a duty system each day on a set pattern.

Duty response time
The VI Team will respond to a duty call by the next working day.

Pre-registration work
When receiving a referral from a person with a visual impairment who is not yet registered, the VI Team would offer immediate screening assessment carried out by phone. Where appropriate and with users’ agreement, an eye examination with a view to registration will be requested. We have a review procedure which we follow to check the progress of eye examination requests.

If safety or urgent issues are identified, our staff will carry out a pre-registration assessment via a home visit.

Assessment of newly registered people
The VI Team will offer newly registered adults an assessment of needs within six weeks of receiving a referral.

We will offer newly registered children an assessment of needs within four weeks of receiving a referral.

For people with dual sensory impairment, we will assess their needs in conjunction with the council's services for people who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Other assessments
Our staff will carry out all other assessments within six weeks of referral. These assessments include:

Service provision
A care plan or rehabilitation plan will be drawn up to meet assessed needs. Based on assessed needs, the VI Team will supply and demonstrate equipment to maximise independence.
