Blind Person’s Income Tax Allowance

Home > Services > Social Care and Health > Disabilities > Sensory Impairment

People who are registered blind (but not those registered partially sighted) are entitled to a special income tax allowance in addition to the other tax allowances that everybody gets. An income tax allowance is the amount of income which you do not have to pay tax for. For the tax year 2007-2008, the Blind Person’s Income Tax Allowance is £1,730. A married couple who both qualify for this allowance can claim an allowance each. If you are married, you can transfer any surplus Blind Person's Income Tax Allowance to your husband or wife. If you think you can claim the allowance, contact your Tax Office.
