Benefits for people who are registered blind or partially sighted
Home > Services > Social Care and Health > Disabilities > Sensory Impairment
Contrary to popular belief there is no such thing as a blind pension. However, depending on their financial and other circumstances (such as health and other disabilities), blind and partially sighted people may be entitled to Income Support. There are also a range of benefits and premiums specifically for disabled people and their carers, as shown in the list below. Some of these benefits are not means-tested but entitlement to others are dependent on the individual’s financial situation.
- Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance
- Carer's Allowance
- Blind Person's Income Tax Allowance
- Working Tax Credit -This new tax credit has replaced the Disabled Person's Tax Credit and it takes into account whether someone claiming this credit has any disability.
- Housing Benefit and Council Tax reduction - Blind registration or other disabilities are taken into account when calculating whether a person is entitled to Housing Benefit. Depending on income and other personal circumstances, registered blind and partially sighted people may be eligible for Council Tax benefit or discounts.
- Free telephone directory enquiry service
- TV licence blind concession
- Postal concession
- Disabled person's car badge
