Royal National Institute of the Blind offers the Talking Book Service which is a library of books professionally recorded on DAISY-format CDs and delivered to blind or partially sighted people by post. Their catalogues cover a wide range of titles, including:
- fiction - for example: romances, crime, horror, war stories
- non-fiction - for example: biographies, anthropology, sport, history, music, travel
- books for children
- books in Asian languages and Welsh
RNIB Talking Books can only be used on DAISY-format CD players. People who subscribe to this service can either buy their own players or, for a higher subscription fee, receive a player on loan from RNIB.
The Talking Book Service is for people who cannot read standard typescript (N12 or smaller) at normal reading distances with the best possible spectacles. Membership costs £73 per annum which includes the loan of a DAISY-format CD player. For residents in Renfrewshire who are registered blind or partially sighted, the membership fee is paid by the Renfrewshire Council Social Work Department.
