Free personal care
Home > Services > Social Care and Health > Social Work > Home Care
Personal and nursing care is available without charge for everyone in Scotland aged 65 and over who needs it, whether at home, in hospital or in a care home.
Free nursing care is available for people of any age.
To receive personal care services from Renfrewshire Council, or payments which allow you to choose who will provide the services to you, you need to have an assessment by your local social work team to see if you need them. Their details are on the right hand menu. The types of personal care provided will vary according to your assessed care needs.
If you live in a care home, the local authority will assess whether you need these services. If so, it will pay £149 on your behalf directly to your care provider for personal care and a further £67 per week if you need nursing care.
If you need an assessment , a social worker or other professional such as a nurse, will carry this out to identify your requirements and how best to meet them.
Please note:
- eligibility for Attendance Allowance or Disability Living Allowance is not affected by free personal care provided in your own home.
- free personal care does not depend on income or savings
- if you are eligible for free personal care, payments will be made directly to the provider of your care service.
- if your care is not provided by or through Renfrewshire Council social work department, your care service must be provided by an organisation approved by Renrewshire Council.
- all nursing care provided in your own home by the NHS is free of charge.
