Parent support - an introduction
Home > Services > Social Care and Health > Children and Family Care > Youth Justice Services
When providing parent support, we continue to use the definition the Audit Commission gave in 1994:
“any activity or facility provided either by statutory agencies or by community groups or individuals, aimed at providing advice and support to parents to help them in bringing up their children”.
When dealing with young people who had been referred to us because they had committed an offence, we knew that by looking at the whole situation, we were limiting the support to only a specific group of parents. Through discussion and negotiation, we developed partnerships with other services and agencies and we are now able to reach more parents from a variety of referral routes.
We have trained workers who use a wide range of parent support materials to deliver group programmes, ‘Handling Teenage Behaviour’, with colleagues in Education, Health and Career Services. Our groups work across Renfrewshire, some during the day, others at night, to fit in with parents’ work commitments. Group programmes generally run for eight weeks. However, individual support is also available using the same programmed material. To receive parent support, you must be the parent of a teenager and want to take part and benefit from this extra support.
We encourage effective and sensitive parenting, with clear boundaries, which makes the parents and young people feel secure. We believe that promoting authoritative parenting (confident parenting) will lead to positive outcomes.
We use materials such as Parenting Wisely, Empathy, Situations, Care and Control, Approach, Positive and Empowering (E.S.C.A.P.E.) Parallel Lines programmes.
