'Mentoring is the offer and availability of one-to-one advice and encouragement which focuses on the positive and future aspirations of the individual. Mentoirng seeks to realise and fulfil potential, develop skills and promote new opportunities'.
As a mentor you will support 'looked after' young people to remain engaged with secondary education then support them through the transition to further education, employment and training by providing
- individual support to a young person
- personal, social and vocational development
- the young person with new skills by promoting academic achievement, encouraging vocational achievement and facilitating independence and success
- regular reports and contact summaries, and
- advocacy when appropriate.
You will find yourself in many different situations, facing diverse issues that you have possibly never dealt with before. To make sure you have the appropriate skills and values required for mentoring, a rigorous selection procedure is followed involving a group interview then individual interviews. You will undetrgo a Disclosure Scotland check and 6 three hour training sessions before you are allocated a young person to support.
Depending on the needs of the young person you are supporting and how much time you have to offer will decide how much time you will need to give to the young person. On average a young person receives 2-6 hours of support a week and will see their mentors once or twice a week.
You will be paid a similar wage to a residential child care worker.
