Paisley Town Centre Conservation Area covers most of Paisley town centre, and includes the ancient abbey and Victorian Clark town hall on the east bank of the White Cart Water. On the west bank, the High Street and Oakshaw hill are crowned with five skyline landmarks, including the great Coats Memorial church and domed John Neilson Institution.

Properties in Paisley Town Centre Conservation Area
The Cross and Oakshaw were designated as separate conservation areas in 1975 and combined, extended and classed as 'outstanding' in 1981. This conservation area was extended and renamed Paisley Town Centre Conservation Area in 2008. The area has 120 listed buildings, including no less than 14 which are category A.

A Character Appraisal for Paisley Town Centre Conservation Area has been produced which defines its important features and characteristics. The appraisal covers the area's historic development, its special townscape and architectural interest, and includes consideration of significant buildings and open spaces which establish character. It provides a context for the assessment of development proposals, identifying opportunities and priorities for enhancement.

The Paisley Town Centre Conservation Area Management Plan builds on the work of the Character Appraisal document by setting out the manner in which conservation issues are dealt with in Paisley Town Centre. It also provides objectives for reviewing and increasing the protection currently afforded to important listed and historic structures within the Conservation Area.

At present the Management Plan refers to a number of policy documents, some of which were approved through Renfrew District Council. However, it is intended that the Paisley Town Centre Conservation Area Management Plan will be reviewed and updated on a section by section basis, during 2009.

As with many town centre conservation areas Paisley Town Centre will continue to evolve. Recent and on going projects are detailed in the Paisley Town Centre Regeneration 2010 document below.
