What street naming and numbering involves
Home > Services > Environment and Planning > Planning > Street Naming and Addresses
The street naming and numbering service provided by the council involves:
- allocating street names within Renfrewshire
- allocating numbers to properties on those streets
- notifying people and organisations (for example, emergency services) who need to keep an up-to-date record of all new or amended property addresses
- in exceptional circumstances, re-naming streets and re-numbering properties.
1. Once work has started on site, we contact the developer for information on the layout of the development to allow the street naming process to start.
Information which we require to allocate street names and numbers:
To allow us to carry out the naming of streets, we need drawings showing the layout of the development, allowing individual properties and roads to be identified. For flatted or sub-divided properties, we need floor layouts for each level to allow individual units to be allocated a separate address.
Specification of format and content for submitted drawings:
- We prefer drawings to be submitted in electronic format (preferably AutoCAD files). In such cases, the drawings should show only the site layout (and floor plans for sub-divided or flatted properties) as well as roads and footways to allow the identification of individual properties. Where drawings are submitted with additional layers or elements, a clear statement of which layers provide the above information must also be supplied to enable staff to easily identify the relevant information.
- We also request that developers offer suggestions for new street name(s), if they have a preference.
- In addition, we request any further details of properties included in the development which will assist in the naming and numbering process.
3. The street name and property numbers are allocated in accordance with the council's approved street naming and numbering conventions. These are available to view below.
4. Royal Mail is contacted for the correct postcode.
5. The developer and relevant organisations are notified of the new full postal addresses.
Guidelines for new street names:
The selection of street names takes account of the following:
- The first part of the street name (for example 'Cotton...' as in 'Cotton Street') should not already appear in a Renfrewshire street name, or if it does, the street(s) where it is used must be in the immediate vicinity of the new development. This is to make sure that people trying to find the street are not diverted to the wrong area of Renfrewshire.
- The second part of the street name (for example 'Street' as in 'Cotton Street') should reflect the nature of the development. For example a broad, tree-lined street could have the name 'Avenue'.
- Where possible we try to keep historical names which were formerly used in or around the development site.
The Council has a standard way of numbering properties. This is described in detail in the document Street Naming and Numbering Conventions. The way we number properties is the same as that used by Glasgow City Council and the Renfrewshire Joint Valuation Board.

Details of all addresses created are sent to people and organisations who need to keep an up-to-date record of all new addresses, for example emergency services, public utility companies and Royal Mail.
