Preventing illegal parking
Home > Services > Transport and streets > Parking and car parks
Renfrewshire Council manages and enforces a range of parking regulations that were previously the responsibility of traffic wardens and the Police. Illegal parking is now a civil matter.
Where in the past you were used to the presence of traffic wardens, you will now see the council's team of parking attendants.
There are no new regulations and parking rules and zones remain as they are. The responsible driver who parks legally will have no cause for concern. But those who continue to park badly, causing disruption and problems for others, will be penalised.
Our aim is to keep our streets clear of illegally-parked vehicles to ensure that traffic can flow more freely, buses can use the bays provided, deliveries can be made on time and that short-stay free parking areas are not abused.
How and where can I pay a fine?
You can get more information, and pay a fine online, on our parking fines webpage.
You can also use these different payment methods:
- By post
Please write the notice number on the back of your cheque or postal order.
- By telephone
- In person
Car parks and parking bays
Where you are using a defined parking bay, if any part of your vehicle is parked outwith the bay, you are liable to get a ticket.
Parking bays are clearly marked and allow enough room for most cars or vans. Parking badly can be a hazard to other road users and pedestrians and can prevent other drivers finding a space.
Pay and Display car parks and on-street areas
Pay and Display ticket machines are in use in a number of the car parks and on-street areas operated by Renfrewshire Council. The times during which parking charges apply, and instructions on how to use the system, are detailed on ticket machines and signs.
Cars which overstay the time limit on the ticket, do not correctly display a valid ticket or park in a disabled bay without an appropriate disabled badge, are illegally parked and will be liable to receive a parking ticket.
Parking rules
Knowing the regulations and abiding by them is the most effective way of avoiding a parking penalty.
| Double yellow lines | Parking is not permitted here at any time. This regulation covers weekdays and weekends and means that anyone who parks even for a few minutes is running the risk of incurring a penalty. |
| Single yellow lines | In general, you cannot park on a single yellow line between 8am and 6pm. However, on-street signs will detail the exact times. |
| Spaces for disabled drivers | If you are not displaying a valid badge, you should not park in these spaces. |
| Residents parking areas | In some areas (which are clearly signed), parking is only allowed if you are displaying a residents permit. |
| Loading restrictions | Check street signs and lines to ensure loading is permitted. Don't use hazard lights – if your vehicle is creating a hazard, it shouldn't be there. |
