Scottish Cycle Training Scheme was developed by Road Safety Scotland. The purpose of this scheme is to make cyclists safer on the roads, by improving their cycling skills and making them aware of their surroundings.
Rather than encouraging cyclists to learn a series of rules, it aims to make cyclists adopt a problem solving approach to using the road.
Cycle Training is managed by Renfrewshire Council Road Safety Team in Renfrewshire primary schools and the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme (SCTS) pack is used by the council for cycle training. Every primary school in Renfrewshire is able to participate in the scheme. Entry is open to children aged ten and over, training and testing is conducted with children in Primary Six or Primary Seven.
The syllabus follows the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme programme endorsed by the Scottish Government consisting of 8 one hour practical lessons with corresponding worksheets for each lesson. More information for parents on cycle training is available from Road Safety Scotland.
Cycling to School Campaign
In 2009 five Renfrewshire schools participated in a Cycle to School Campaign. This was a national campaign designed to encourage children to cycle to school during the month of June 2009. The campaign incorporated major media promotion aimed at drivers to remind them to give young cyclists room.
Cycle friendly zones were created around the schools asking drivers to give kids cycle space, so that children can make a safe and enjoyable journey to school by bike. Schools were visited by the cycle stunt team Riderz who put on a fantastic show and workshops were arranged where children participated in cycle skills, cycle maintenance and choosing a safer route to school.
