'Interreg III B' is a European Union (EU) initiative which encourages local authorities across Europe to work together to provide sustainable solutions to common problems. Since December 2003, Renfrewshire Council in partnership with other local authorities in Germany, the Netherlands and France has been involved in a project called 'Urban Water'. The aim of the project is to allow better understanding of the sources of flooding in our towns and villages and to promote cost effective and sustainable solutions to reduce flood risks.
We have received a grant of approximately £300,000 from the EU and £100,000 from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). This provides a significant additional contribution to the £200,000 which the council has allocated for watercourse maintenance and improvement over the period 2004-2008.
The project involves joint working between engineers and planners from the council, their counterparts from local authorities in the Netherlands, Germany and France and specialists from Scottish Water and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Further information on the projects is available from EU Interreg web site or Urban Water project site. The final report of the project "Urban Water - Living Cities" is available from the web site
