What we have done:
We've spent about £10 million on flood schemes. This has let us build flood prevention schemes and introduce good maintenance and management measures in watercourses and culverts. The flood prevention schemes which have been built have been shown to be effective in reducing flooding.
Major works on flooding from rivers
- Major works has been undertaken on the Espedair Burn in Paisley using Stanely Reservoir and Moredun Playing Fields as a storage for flood water.
- Major upgrading of water channels has now been completed on Kilbarchan Burn, Kilbarchan and improvement works completed at Craigmount Avenue, Glenburn and Peockland Burn, Johnstone.
- Flood prevention schemes at Collier Street, Johnstone and Crosslee, Houston are now complete and operational.
- The North Renfrew Flood Prevention Scheme has received approval from the Scottish Government with Phase 1 scheduled for commencement August 2008. Two further phases will be constructed from late 2008 with competition late 2010.
Flooding is not always caused by rivers, it can also come from sewers which become overloaded during periods of high rainfall. This is the case in our towns and villages during flash floods caused by heavy downpours. We are working to resolve some of these problems in partnership with Scottish Water and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) through a European Union project known as Interreg III B which is studying the problems of drainage and flooding and development sustainable solutions to urban flooding. The European Union provided approximately £300,000 and a further grant of £100,000 was awarded by Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Further information on this project is available on the European Funding page.
