Home > Services > Council and Government > Council Tax > How to reduce your bill
There are some types of property for which we do not charge council tax, either because they are empty or because no one living in them counts towards the tax. These are known as exempt properties.
There are more than 20 types of exempt properties. Here are the main examples:
Occupied properties where everyone living there are:
- students
- aged under 18
- severely mentally impaired
Empty properties that are:
- newly built
- under construction
- uninhabitable
- awaiting demolition
- unfurnished (for up to six months)
- empty because the occupant has died
You can now apply online for unoccupied and unfurnished property, student and severely mentally impaired exemptions.
