Do you qualify for a council tax discount?
Home > Services > Council and Government > Council Tax > How to reduce your bill
When we work out a council tax bill for a property, we base it on two adults living there. If there are fewer than two in your home, we may be able to give you a discount.
Who qualifies?
If only one person aged over 18 lives in your property, you may qualify for a single person discount of 25% off your bill. You can apply for this discount by filling in our single person discount form below, or you can contact us to ask for one to be sent to you.
Some groups of people do not count towards the council tax. If all but one of the occupants of your property fall into any of these groups, then you may be able to get a 25% discount.
These groups include:
- students,student nurses and apprentices
- long-term patients in a hospital or home
- prisoners
- people who are severely mentally impaired, and some care workers
- student nurses or apprentices
- some care workers
Unoccupied properties, second and holiday homes
If no one lives in a property, then we may be able to give you a 50% discount. From 1 April 2006, the discount no longer applies on your water and sewerage charges even if you get a discount on your council tax. Some types of empty property are exempt from council tax altogether.
You can now apply for single person discount, second/holiday home, student, disabled person's reduction and long term patient in a hospital or home discounts using the form below.
