Game dealer licence

Home > Services > Business > Licensing > Animal licences

Before any person may engage in trading in game, he/she must first obtain a Game Dealers Licence from the Local Authority in terms of the Game Act, 1831 and then must obtain a Licence to Deal in Game from the Post Office under the Game Licences Act, 1860.

"Game" is defined in the Game Act, 1831 and includes hares, pheasants, partridges, grouse, heath or moor game and black game. Section 4 of the Game Licences Act, 1860 adds to this definition - woodcock, snipe and rabbit.

The sale of venison is covered by separate legislation under the Deer (Scotland) Act 1996.

Two licences are required to trade in certain game species.
