Following a detailed review of School Crossing Patrols in 2008, Renfrewshire Council brought in several improvements to the school crossing patrol service.

The main change is that patrols have been moved from places where there are traffic light controlled pedestrian crossings, to cover additional places without lights where children cross on their own. The result of these changes are that more locations will be covered on a daily basis. The review of the school crossing patrol service also looked at changes to traffic patterns and road layouts which had taken place in recent years.

All existing and new school crossing patrol sites were individually assessed using national guidelines set by the Local Authority Road Safety Officers Association. This resulted in the decision to relocate school crossing patrollers to locations where the review showed that they are most needed (where children currently face the greater risk of having to cross without any assistance).
