Noise Complaints
If you have a persistent problem with neighbourhood noise, you can make a complaint to the Council's Environmental Services Department. An officer will investigate your complaint and find out whether the Council needs to take action to remove the problem. If they do take action, a notice is sent to the person causing the noise nuisance telling them to restrict or stop their noise making activities. Alternatively, where noise is caused by antisocial behaviour and is found to exceed permitted levels, the perpetrator may be issued with a Warning Notice under the Antisocial Behaviour (Scotland) Act, 2004. Failure to comply with a Warning Notice may result in a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the perpetrator. Where noise is intermittent, you may be asked to keep a diary of the days and times when the noise occurs.
In certain circumstances, the police can also deal with noise complaints.
Burglar alarms
Complaints are regularly received about noise from burglar alarms, particularly when people go on holiday. Sometimes Environmental Services take legal action to break into houses to switch alarms off. To avoid this, and the costs of locksmiths or alarm engineers, why not let the Council and Police know who holds a key for your alarm system? This can be done by filling out a notification form and sending completed copies to Environmental Services and the Police. If the alarm goes off while you are on holiday we can contact the keyholder and have the alarm checked. The Police will also check that your house is secure.
