Funding for Recycling in Renfrewshire
Home > Services > Environment and Planning > Recycling and Waste > Waste Reduction
The Scottish Government set all Scottish councils a target to recycle 25% of waste collected by 2006. Renfrewshire Council's department of environmental services were awarded funding of over £28 million from the Scottish Government's strategic waste fund. This money is being used to help increase levels of recycling and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.
Environment minister, Ross Finnie said, "Improved access to recycling facilities is a major element of the government's commitment to transform the country's record on waste reduction, recycling, composting and recovery. This funding will make sure that many of Renfrewshire citizens have access to recycling facilities".
Where the money went
Environmental services started a programme of work in April 2005 to provide:
- expansion of the fortnightly (brown bin) collection of garden waste to an extra 24,000 households
- expansion of the kerbside box collection service for paper, card, plastics, glass and cans to 42,000 detached and semi detached houses
- new schemes to collect recyclates from communal bins in tenement and flatted properties
- upgrading of facilities at household waste and recycling centres
- development of an education campaign in partnership with the Scottish Waste Awareness Group.
