Good books for tough times, helping your child grow

Whether you’re a parent, carer or teacher reading a story book with a child can be a great way to start talking about troubling issues.
  • Is your child worried about making friends?
  • Is she jealous of a brother or sister?
  • Is he nervous about going to a new school?
  • You’ve had a death in the family – how do you talk to your young child about it?


We’ve put together this handy Good books for tough times booklist from our library stock, targeted at ages 5-8, these books can help children who are going through tough times. The books have been chosen for the quality of their stories and illustrations and can be enjoyed in happier times too.

There are displays of the books in all our libraries , including the mobiles and you can reserve the books from Renfrewshire Libraries straight from the booklist link above.
