Application for delayed admission to primary school - An extra year of pre-school education

Under current legislation, if your child is aged between four and a half and five years old at the start of the school session you have a choice about when your child starts primary school. If your child's birthday is in January or February, you have the right to delay entry to primary school and to have a free pre-school education place for an extra year.

You can also request delayed entry to school if your child's birthday is from September to December, there is no automatic right to an extra pre-school education place in these circumstances and the decision to provide an extra year will be made by the local authority in the best interests of the child.

You can apply for an additional year of pre-school education by contacting the nursery your child attends or by printing off and completing the form below and sending it to the nursery.
